Links between elements in LSF Construction
The links between elements in LSF Construction are one of the determining factors for its success.
The links between elements in LSF construction are one of the determining factors for its success. The use of Light Steel Frame (LSF) profiles, interconnected through screws with small diameters, guarantee a reliability already recognized.
However, what to use for the various connections in the LSF Construction?
Let's divide the solution to adopt according to the materials to be joined:
- Steel-Concrete: in connections to the foundation;
- Metal-Metal: in the connections between profiles;
- Wood-Metal: in the connections on structural boards and façade panels;
- Laminated Plaster: metal in wall and ceiling coverings.
Additionally, we can also include some temporary, non-structural connections or fastenings, such as the use of nails, rivets and staples.
Regarding the connection of the LSF structure to the concrete element, this can be carried out through a mechanical process or a chemical connection. It is recommended to use solutions that provide great strength, with reduced proximity to the fixings to the edge. Tecofix therefore recommends the use of chemical anchors or Spit Tapcon technology (self-tapping screws for concrete), which has been increasingly adopted by installers due to its speed and efficiency on site. Additionally, it is important to ensure a connection that has C1 seismic performance at the construction site.
What types of screws are used in Construction LSF?
In the LSF constructive process, 2 types of screws are normally used, according to their function:
- Self-drilling screws;
- Self-tapping screws.
What is the application of each screw?
Self-drilling screws are applied in the connection of profiles that do not have pre-drilled holes, connections between floor or wall OSB sheets. Depending on the place of application, they can have diameters between 4.2 mm and 6.3 mm, and variable length, according to the thickness to be fixed. 2/3 thread steps must be guaranteed, in addition to the drill, when crossing parts. When fastening wooden elements to metal, self-drilling with a fin can be used. Since, in mixed rehabilitations, with heavier metal structures and LSF, self-drilling can also have a drill with a more varied length, according to the thickness of the steel to be drilled.
In the case of self-tapping screws, they are used in the fixation of pre-drilled frames (these are of reduced length, and rarely exceed 30 mm), for the fixation of plasterboard or insulation, in wood/ OSB elements.
In short, the range of screws for mounting an LSF frame is extensive and could be further increased if we take into account your type of head, for example, hex, embedding or cheese, and the type of fitting, such as, philips, torx or square. These screws are fixed mechanically using screwdrivers suitable for these applications.
